Ammonia (NH₃), vital for fertilizer production, forms ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) in water—an essential plant nutrient that, in excess, threatens aquatic balance. Conventional NH₄⁺ detection methods are complex and slow. This book explores the use of modified κ-carrageenan, a seaweed-derived polymer, as a sensing material in optical fiber sensors. Its interaction with NH₄⁺ is analyzed and benchmarked against standard methods. The resulting sensor shows enhanced sensitivity and offers a faster, simpler, and more portable approach to water quality monitoring.
Water pollution is a global issue impacting the environment and a country’s economy. Often driven by rapid industrial growth, it poses serious risks to aquatic life and human health. Although various sensors have been developed to monitor water quality, many still face performance limitations. Integrating sensing materials in optical technology is crucial to enhancing system efficiency. Polysaccharides have been identified as promising sensing materials due to their favorable physicochemical properties. This book discusses the structural modification of polysaccharides, their interactions with analytes, and the performance of polysaccharide-based sensors in water quality monitoring applications.
